With 11 of the 32 slots filled by byes, the preliminary round opened with five matches to reduce the field to 16. Ashley Galliers and David Hooper produced the two whitewashes of that round, dispatching Alan Brown and Ronnie Allen 3-0 respectively. Brian Rees came through against Clive Marsh 3-1, Andrew Davison ousted Nick Davies by the same scoreline, and John Mills saw off Iwan Griffiths 3-1 to complete the Last 16 line-up.
The Last 16 was dominated by one-sided scorelines. Six of the eight matches finished 3-0, including Darren Morgan's dismissal of David Richards, Galliers over Keith Thomas, Davison past Allan Jones, David Allen against Justin Brown, Hooper over Tony Williams, and Brian Rees's win over Linden Cox. Jon Breeze beat Mills 3-1, and David Brown came through against Jeff Denscombe by the same scoreline.
The quarter-finals produced the first standout performance of the day from Darren Morgan, who blanked Brian Rees 3-0 with a pair of 40-plus breaks. Jon Breeze and David Hooper matched that with 3-0 wins over David Allen and David Brown, while Andrew Davison survived the only tight quarter, coming through 3-2 against Galliers in a deciding frame.
Morgan continued in imperious form in the semi-finals, whitewashing Davison 3-0 and registering the day's highest break — a 71 — in the process. Hooper's path was tougher: he trailed Breeze before winning the last two frames to take the decider 3-2 and book his place in the final.
The final lived up to its billing. Morgan started the stronger, but Hooper refused to let the match slip and forced a decider at 2-2. Morgan held his nerve to take the fifth frame and complete a 3-2 win, sealing the title with a display built on consistent heavy scoring throughout the day.
